St. Peter Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery

History

St. Peter Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery 5510 West Mill Road Granville, Milwaukee County

The congregation was first organized about 1848 and was served by Pastor Abner of Cedarburg and Pastor Guenter of the Town of Mequon. In 1860, a church was built on Hopkins St. near Silver Spring. A split in the congregation left more conservative members to build a new on on Mill Rd. in 1866, across from the cemetery site.

The land for the cemetery was donated by Henry Hassel, Sr., who served 24 years as a pathmaster. He donated the land after building a comfortable fortune farming and in real estate sales after coming to Milwaukee from Hannover, Germany in 1844 at the age of 25.

The cemetery is small but well cared for. The first burial was August 23 1871.

That church and Immanuel Lutheran eventually merged in 1973 to form St. Peter Immanuel Lutheran at 7801 W. Acadia. One of the Largest Lutheran churches in Milwaukee.

He was buried with his wife Wilhelmina, and several of their 16 children in the area that was in the path of roadway.

In 1976 Plans were made to widen the road. 50 plots were planned to be moved.
