Cistercian Monastery Cemetery Also known as Our Lady of Spring Bank Cemetery
This cemetery was located on the grounds of the Cistercian abbey in Oconomowoc Lake Village on the southwest corner of the intersection of Highway 16 and Sawyer Road (Highway PP), Section 1, Summit Township. This monastery was thought as being in Oconomowoc because of its location on the eastern shore of Oconomowoc Lake at the town line between Summit and Oconomowoc.
History
The cemetery was established in 1929. The monastery was the first one for the Catholic order or the Cistercians of the Common Observance/White Monks in the United States. The monestary was known by several names: Spring Bank, Our Lady of Spring Bank, Cistercian Abbey, Our Lady of Spring Bank. The cemetery was for members of the order and had only seven burials.
All monastery buildings were razed in Autumn, 1985. The cemetery was relocated to Sparta, WI in 1985 when the monastery moved there.
