John Howells Obit: It is sad to contemplate how very sudden our friend was taken away from us. He was in the church [Congregational] Thursday afternoon, December 22nd and was gone at midnight the following Saturday. He got up on Saturday morning as usual, and went out of the house, feeling just as well as he had felt for some time. About 9 a.m., he was taken sick with severe pain. During the day his suffering increased; the physician was sent for, who came as promptly as possible. Dr. Yates did his utmost to alleviate the pain, yet all was futile; no earthly power -- however competent and efficient otherwise, the medical aid rendered was -- could resist the advent of the grim destroyer, death. "There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit", when, "the time of tje departure is at hand."
He breathed his last, as stated, midnight and we shall see him no more on earth.

John Howells was born at Cwm-gwen-llan, near Gwynfe, Carmarthenshire, South Wales, August 14, 1820. His parents were Samuel and Anne Howells. His father well-known as a Congregational preacher among the Welsh of our state. He was brought up on a farm, and followed the occupation of farming all his life. In 184[5] he married Margaret [Morgan], of the same place. They had eight children, two of whom died in infancy, the remaining six out-living their parents. In [1851] they came as a family to Milwaukee, where they resided for about one year. They went thence to Bark River, Waukesha County, WI, where they bought some land to make for themselves a home. In 1862 they came to Bangor, where they again secured a dwelling for themselves. In 1866 they left here and went to Foreston, near Lime Springs, Iowa. Their home there was near the Methodist church and was a convenient place to dwell in, in every respect. In 1870 Mrs. Howells died, and was buried in that neighborhood. Nine years afterward he came back to Bangor, and sometime after married Mrs. Mary Davies, who with her children lived on the place where he spent the remaining years of his earthly career. Both Mr. and Mrs. Howells were faithful members of the Congregational church, and as such he will be very much missed from our midst. We hope "his end was peace and that he now enjoys the blessedness of the future state."

His funeral took place Tuesday, the 27th and it was large and solemn. The service at the house was conducted by the pastor of the church and by the grave he was assisted by Revs. J.S. Wilson and J.J. Vaughan. His uncle, Howell Howells of Minneapolis, his brother, Edward Howells of Bark River; his sons, John, Morgan, Samuel and Edward of South Dakota, and nephew, Daniel Howells, of Bark River, were in attendance at the funeral in addition to the relatives who live in this vicinity. His daughters, Mrs. Cole, of Winnebago, IA, and Mrs. Calvert of Seattle , WA, were not able to attend the obsequies of their beloved father. The funeral sermon was delivered by the pastor Sunday Jan. 8th at 2 p.m. at the Congregational church, to a large and attentive audience. H.D.

Notes for Margaret Howell:
Mrs. Thomas J. Williams obit: Margaret Howell Williams was born June 7, 1836 in Wales, G.B. When 15 years of age, she came to America with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Howell, and settled in Waukesha Co., WI. She was married to Thomas J. Williams, December 28, 1855 and located on a farm near Ottawa, Waukesha County, where they lived until Mr. Williams' death in 1904. To this union were born eight sons and three daughters, ten of whom are still living: John S. of Wales, WI; Thomas D., Appleton; Edward H., Judsonia, Ark.; David B., Winnett, MT; Morgan H., North Prairie; William W., Portland, OR; Mary A. Hooper, Palmyra; Elizabeth Jane Hooper, Escondido, CA; Margaret Ellen Coen, Chicago; Moses R., Alta., Canada. Stephen R. died at San Diego, CA, June 18, 1912.
After her husband's death Mrs. Williams made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W.A. Hooper, Palmyra.
Thursday morning, September 9, 1920. after a month's illness, she quietly passed to her rest, The funeral was held Saturday afternoon; Rev. John Hammand of Wales officiating. Mrs. Theodore Nuoffer and Mrs. Harley Williams sang most comforting hymns, with Miss Jane Williams accompanying.
Thus is briefly told the principal events in the life of Mrs. Williams, but we wish to add our tribute to this splendid mother, who has given to the world such a fine family, among them being Rev. T.D. Williams, but better known here as Rev. Dan Williams, superintendent of the Appleton district of the M.E. Church. Only twice before has the large family circle been broken and then not until she had seen them all reach maturity--a wonderful and unusual record. To meet her was always a pleasure and inspiration, and she rounded out a life so full and complete that her entering into rest, is as beautiful as her living. She will continue to live in the lives of her children, and her influence, always for good, will go on to eternity. [Palmyra Enterprise September 1920]

He was the father of seven children, six of which came over to this country with him, and established themselves in Genesee, WI and there remained until the end of his life, except for the few weeks he stayed with Mr. Edward Howells, his son-in-law. Mrs. Rees [Ann], Mrs. Howells [Elizabeth], Mrs. Harris [Margaret], Richard, David and Daniel.
He was a hard worker and a very devoted father to all his children. He was not ill for many weeks before his death. He was not a member of any church but was well respected by church members and we sincerely believe he has been delivered by the blood which cleanses all sin. The Lord is a refuge to all His Children.
He was buried in Jerusalem cemetery on the 28th of March. The Rev. D.E. Phillips officiated in English and Welsh at the funeral.

Ann Felix Rees [Dousman Index, March 1, 1929]
The funeral of Mrs. Ann Rees, wife of the late David Rees, took place from the late home on Monday afternoon. Services were at Jerusalem Church, Rev. O.O. Jones, a former pastor, and the Rev. J. Pugh Jones, officiating. Mrs. Rees died after a short illness of pneumonia, and in her death the community was thrown into gloom and sorrow. No better obituary could be given any person than this given to Mrs. Rees: "She was a grand old lady and will be missed by every one for a long time. This is true - She was of a kind and thoughtful nature, sympathetic of others, devoted to the service of the Master and the church that she had served for many years." Left to mourn are four sons, David Felix of Berkely, CA, John of Wales, Dan of Menasha, Ervin on the old home and five grand children. Great sympathy goes out to the family, especially Mr. John Rees who is very sick at this time. [Funeral on February 25, 1929]
