Blessed Sacrament Cemetery

Blessed Sacrament Cemetery is located at South 61st and West Howard Milwaukee.

History

Frederick Harmeyer donated the land in 1857 for Blessed Sacrament cemetery, and the Catholic school and the church that once stood there. A book, "Early Catholic Church Property", by Rev. Peter Leo Johnson, lists a sacred plot in Greenfield township which was established Sept. 7, 1857 when Frederick Harmeyer donated three acres to Bishop Henni for such use.

The church was established about 1858, and closed for services about 1914.

The records for the cemetery were burned along with it's chapel in the 1950's. The cemetery is still in limited use. It has been used for dozens of burials since 1914, some very recently. Recent burials have been recorded at the office of Calvary Cemetery.

This is a very small cemetery, with many fallen stones. Most of the stones are very large so if fallen the inscriptions on the underside could not be read. There is a lot of underbrush that could be removed from the cemetery.
