Milwaukee County Police Department

These diaries are a mixture of work and family affairs of William Bramwell Sizer. William was on the Milwaukee Police Department and a member of the Sherman Street Methodist Episcopal Church, later transferring their membership to Kingsley Methodist Episcopal Church and died in 1916. The diaries give a pretty good view of life in the years involved. The diaries were given to me for presentation on this site by family members see contributors page.

14 deg. NW wind. Partly cloudy. Moderate. Snow flurries PM. I am at home sick with Renal Colic. Intended to go to work today but feel much worse than yesterday. Average Min. Temp. for Dec.- 13 deg. for year 39 1/2 deg. Total no. of arrests last year-45. Including 18 rioters at Volkman's place in Jan. last. Summary arrests - 11. Went to watch night service last night at Kingsley. This diary cost 45 cts. @ Ferdenhardts.

-10 deg. NW wind. Fair. Reported for duty this morn. Smudde had my beat during my absence. Cold all day.

-8 deg. SW wind. Fair. Rising temp. Asked per. of Sergt. Heinemann to go down town to pay insurance. Regular drill this week. Downtown & back, 8:45 to 9:45. Pd. Ins. to Jos. Herzburge, Pabst Bldg. $34.07. 4:40 PM. Arrested Nick Fechtel 1159-23rd St. D & Dis. Took him out of Ihlenfelds Saloon.

13 deg. SW wind. Cloudy. Chilly wind. Clearing at 9 AM. In court, 9 AM. with Fechtel. He engaged Atty. Kershaw to defend him. I spoke to Kershaw & they decided to plead guilty. Sent. Susp. on payment of costs. Back to beat at 10 AM. I paid our water tax - $1..29. Met Linden at 27th & Fond du Lac at 3:40 PM.

20 deg. SW wind. Partly cloudy. Raw wind. Drill day:- Back to beat at 4:40. Walters BIrthdfay. He is 20 yrs. old. S.S. Board Meeting at our house this eve. About 25 persons came.

32 deg. W wind. Cloudy. Damp air. Asked perm. to go down & pay Taxes. Made the trip from 8:45 to 9:45. Det. Goetzen arrested Joe Schmidt 1059-26th St. & asked me for information. I tel. him at 8:20 AM.

23 deg. SE wind. Partly cloudy. Raw wind. Alfred Jenk, an adopted boy, ran away from home, 1162-21st St. Was taken to the Sta. I took him home. He is 9 yrs. old & has a bad reputation in school. Letter for Mil. Bridge Co. to del. to Trimbom. Reg. Drill again today.

30 deg. N. Wind. Cloudy. Snow flurry at 6:30 AM. Commenced snowing from NE at 4:40 PM. Regular "Nor Easter".

28 deg. NE wind. Cloudy. Stormed all night from NE. About 4 or 5 inches of wet snow fell. Rubber boots. Drifts. Drill day. Back to beat at 4:35. Rain all PM.

24 deg. Northerly wind. Cloudy. Growing colder. Walks very slippery. Met Sergt. Schneider at 3:30 PM, 27th & Center.

20 deg. NW wind. Partly cloudy. Growing colder. Reported condition of walks on Fond du Lac, west of RR tracks to JK., Lieut. He told me to see City Atty. Went to City Atty's office 8:45 to 9:45. He told me to call next week & he would look the matter up.
