Washington County Wisconsin Genealogy

Caroline Elizabeth Louise Heiland was born April 23, 1851 in Washington Co., Wisconsin, the daughter of Charlotte Rosenthal and Heinrich Friedrich Heiland. She was one of eight daughters born to Heinrich and Charlotte, five of whom lived to maturity. My Aunt Grace Geraldine Spaeth Schneider told me that her grandmother, Caroline, used to tell her how, her father, Heinrich would brag that his girls were the best field hands that anyone had.

Caroline was married at St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church to Charles (Carl) Friedrich Spaeth on Dec. 1, 1871. Witnesses were: Gottfried Rosenthal, Jakob Meyer, Gottfried Rosenthal II, August Rosenthal, Heinrich Rosenthal, Maria Christiana Sophia Rosenthal, and Caroline Meyer. Sarah Wakeland, a descendant of Heinrich Heiland, through the Landvatter line, graciously contributed this wedding information by copying the records from the church for me.

Charles was the son of Gottlieb and Barbara Spaeth, who farmed in the Town of Addison after first living in Sandusky, Ohio.

I am trying to find out more about the Spaeth family, Charles's brother Gottlieb, and from where in Germany their parents came.

Gottlieb was born in 1845 and Charles was born March 20, 1847.

Charles Spaeth was a barn builder. Aunt Grace took my brother, Charlie and me to Wisconsin in 1965, when I was 17 (Charlie was 15) and had just graduated from high school. We learned how to identify his barns by their style. We met some very old Spaeth aunts while there and visited home towns. Aunt Grace says that their place in Cadott was referred to as "Spaeth Corner."

Also according to Aunt Grace, three Spaeth brothers originally came to America together. Gottlieb and Barbara Spaeth may have been married in Ohio, or in Germany before coming to America.

Charles and Caroline Spaeth had eight children:

Heinrich "Henry" Wilhelm Spaeth, born Sept. 14, 1873.

Louise "Lou" Spaeth, born in 1875, and died at the age of 100 in 1975.

Charles Christian Spaeth, born August 29, 1878 in Cadott, Wisconsin, and died January 24, 1915 in Mendota, Wisconsin.
