He is listed as living at the Palmyra Hospital home, Soldiers and Veterans census listing in 1890.
The story has been told that Otis enlisted first so that Ruel could stay and work on the family farm. Their Mother, another Mary, also lived with them. The Mother, Mary, was living in Somerset township, Niagara county, New York in 1830. Her husband, Ruel Senior, is not listed as living. Mary and Ruel Senior, were both from Mass. and married there. The school was right across the street from the old Ottawa Court House on Hwy. 67. In 1890 he is found living at the Palmyra Hospital home for Veterans In 1900 census he is living in Slyvan township, Richland County, WI He was listed as being 79 years old He is listed as living with his nephew, Otis Jr. He did not appear alive in any 1910 census records. He bought 120 acres of land on the corners of Hwy. 67 and Hwy. C on Sept. 1, 1844, cash sale, paid. He was 21 then. He enlisted in the Civil War on Feb. 8, 1865.
