The following is a list of Public Tuberculosis Sanatoria in Wisconsin in 1919. Many of these early public facilities were staffed and additionally funded by religious institutions or other benevolent organizations. There were also facilities called TB Boarding Houses which were not listed in this book.

Station, Wales) Opened: Nov. 7, 1907 For incipient and moderately advanced cases Capacity: 196 Rates-$15 per week for those able to pay others admitted at county and state expense Superintendent and Medical Director: Dr. R.L. Williams Application should be made to the superintendent. More Information>>> TOMAHAWK LAKE (ONEIDA COUNTY) State Camp for Convalescents Opened: August 12, 1915 For convalescent consumptives discharged from state, county or other sanatoria. Capacity: 30 Rates: $10 per week for those able to pay Indigent patients are admitted at county and state expense Superintendent: F.A. Reich Medical Director: Dr. R.L. Williams of the State Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Wales makes periodical visits. Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: Chicago and North-Western Railway to Tomahawk Lake Station, thence by wagon three miles overland or by gasoline launch via the Tomahawk Lake route. NORTHERN WISCONSIN STATE SANATORIUM Opened: Not yet in operation The Senate has passed a bill appropriating $75,000 for a new state sanatorium in Northern Wisconsin. This amount will cover only the beginning of the work. Plans will be so drawn that additions may be made later as needed. ASHLAND PUREAIR SANATORIUM-ASHLAND, BAYFIELD and IRON COUNTIES SANATORIUM Opened: not yet in operation A tri-county sanatorium for counties of Ashland, Bayfield and Iron has been provided for by an appropriate of $100,000. A site has been selected at Salmo, Bayfield County, and construction is to begin at once. BAYFIELD COUNTY See Ashland County BROWN COUNTY See Little Rapids EAU CLAIRE COUNTY MOUNT WASHINGTON SANATORIUM-EAU CLAIRE COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: Dec. 15, 1913 For all classes of cases including children Capacity: 45 Rates: $12 per week Superintendent: Mrs. Mildred H. Lucia, R.N. Medical Director: Dr. J.H. Farr Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is within two blocks of the car marked Shawtown which may be taken at any depot. IRON COUNTY See Ashland County JEFFERSON COUNTY JEFFERSON COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: Not yet in operation A 42-patient sanatorium is being constructed and will be ready for occupancy early in the fall of 1919. KENOSHA WILLOW BROOK, KENOSHA COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: 1916 For all classes of cases Capacity: 42 Rates: $10 per week for Kenosha County patients $12 per week for patients from counties outside Superintendent: Miss Ellida Dunker Medical Director: Dr. C. Windesheim Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is easily reached from Kenosha by auto and is within one-fourth mile of the Chicago and Northwestern Electric line, the nearest stop being the Burlington Road. LA CROSSE COUNTY See Onalaska LITTLE CHUTE RIVERVIEW SANATORIUM-OUTAGAMIE COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: Jan 1914 For all classes of cases. Capacity: 34 Rates: $10 per week to Outagamie County patients $15 per week for patients from counties outside Superintendent: Miss B.L. Boyle Medical Director: Dr. D. C. Boyd Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is reached most easily by taking the interurban car at either Appleton or Kaukauna, leaving the car at Sanatorium Station. LITTLE RAPIDS HICKORY GROVE SANATORIUM-BROWN COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: Feb. 15, 1914 For all classes of cases Capacity: 36 Rates: $8 per week for patients from Brown County $10 per week for others Superintendent: Miss Emma Rosenbohm, R.N. Visiting Physician: Dr. W.E. Leaper, Green Bay Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: Take the interurban going north from Little Rapids to Sanatorium Station. MADISON, R.F.D. No. 3 SANATORIUM MADISON SANATORIUM, Mac Farland Road Opened: Dec. 1917 For curable cases only. Applicants from Madison and Dane county receive first consideration. Capacity: 35 Rates: $60 to $80 per month. Special arrangements as low as $10 per week. Superintendent: Mrs. Virginia Molton Attending Physician: Dr. Louis R. Head Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is easily reached from Kenosha by auto and is within one-fourth mile of the Chicago and Northwestern Electric line, the nearest stop being the Burlington Road. MANITOWOC COUNTY See Whitelaw MARATHON COUNTY See Wausau MILWAUKEE BLUE MOUND SANATORIUM Opened: 1907 For all non-bed cases with a probably good prognosis Capacity: 40 Rates: $10 per week Superintendent: Miss Violet M. Jensen Medical Director: Dr. G. R. Ernst Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is one and a half miles north of Wauwatosa end of the Wells-Farwell car line running between Milwaukee and Wauwatosa. SOCIAL WORKERS' TUBERCULOSIS SANATORIUM (corner Keefe and Humbolt Ave) Opened: Oct. 6, 1911 For incipient and convalescent cases Capacity: 26 Rates: Free, or dependent upon ability to pay; the charges vary from $5 up to $10 per week. Superintendent: Mrs. E.G. Lindeman Medical Director: Dr. W.H. Washburn 1240 Wells Bldg. Application should be made to the superintendent. TUBERCULOSIS WARD OF THE MILWAUKEE CHILDREN'S FREE HOSPITAL Opened: 1907 For cases of tuberculosis of the bones. Capacity: 12 Rates: Free to indigent cases. $1 per day for others. Superintendent: Miss Gertrude McKee Application should be made to the superintendent. MILWAUKEE COUNTY See Wauwatosa ONALASKA OAK FOREST SANATORIUM-LA CROSSE COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: 1918 For all classes of cases Capacity: 40 Rates: $12 per week Superintendent: Miss Lavina Dietrichsen Visiting Physician: Dr. G. Lueck Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is three miles from La Crosse. OUTAGAMIE COUNTY See Little Chute PEWAUKEE THE OAK SANATORIUM-WAUKESHA COUNTY Opened: July 12, 1918 For all classes of cases. Capacity: 27; to be increased to 40. Rates: $12 per week. Superintendent-Miss Dora M. Bresnahan. Medical Director: Dr. N.G.B. Nixon, Hartland. Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is one and a half miles east of Pewaukee. More Information>>> RACINE SUNNY REST SANATORIUM-RACINE COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: Dec 1913 For all classes of cases. Capacity: 36. Rates: $10 per week to Racine County Patients. $12 to outsiders Superintendent-Miss Elizabeth C. Carpenter. Medical Director: Dr. Theodore Brehm Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is one-half mile from Gatliff, the nearest railway station, on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. Chicago and Milwaukee electrics may be taken to local sanatorium station. The sanatorium is easily reached by auto from Racine. STEVENS POINT RIVER PINES SANATORIUM FOR TUBERCULOSIS Opened: 1906 For incipient and moderately advanced cases. Capacity: 44 Rates: $27.30 to $55 per week, including all medical and nursing attention. Superintendent-Miss M.B. Hart. Medical Director: Dr. J.W. Coon Surgical Director: Dr. F. E. Walbridge Pathologist: Dr. Paul A. Ferrier Application should be made to the medical director. How to reach: The sanatorium is two miles from Stevens Point, the nearest railroad connection, on the main line of the Soo Railroad between Chicago, Minneapolis and St. Paul, and on the Green Bay and Western Railroad. WAUKESHA COUNTY See Pewaukee WAUWATOSA MUIRDALE SANATORIUM-MILWAUKEE COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: 1914-1915 For all classes of cases. Capacity: 300; a building for children under construction, will increase capacity to 400. Rates: $10 per week; $5 per week, and county charges Superintendent-Dr. Harry Cohn Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is about seven miles from the center of Milwaukee and two miles west of Wauwatosa. It may be reached from Milwaukee by taking the Wells-Farwell car marked Wauwatosa to the end of the line. More Information>>> CHILDREN'S PREVENTORIUM For pre-tuberculosis children of Milwaukee, conducted by the City of Milwaukee under the supervision of the City Health Department. Superintendent and Medical Directory: Dr. George Ernst WHITELAW MAPLE CREEK SANATORIUM-MANITOWOC COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: Mar. 1, 1912-Addition in 1914 For all classes of cases. Capacity: 36; Rates: $10 per week. Superintendent-Miss Jennie Jennings Medical Director: Dr. John M. Kelley Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is one and one-quarter miles from the village of Whitelaw on the Chicago and North-Western Railroad. It may be reached by auto from Whitelaw. WINNEBAGO SUNNY VIEW SANATORIUM-WINNEBAGO COUNTY SANATORIUM Opened: 1915 For all classes of cases. Capacity: 44 Rates: $10 per week to resident patients $12 per week to non-residents Superintendent-Miss Helen Scheller Medical Director: Dr. J.E. Schein Application should be made to the superintendent. How to reach: The sanatorium is situated near the city of Oshkosh, within the limits of the village of Winnebago; best reached by taking the interurban car at either Oshkosh or Neenah and leaving the car at Cox's Corner, or by train to State Hospital station.

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY ROCKY KNOLL Opened: August 1926 Capacity: 80 beds 16-acre site three miles north of Plymouth In the 1950s, Rocky Knoll began to shift its care to rehabilitative care of the elderly. IN 1992 the old sanatorium was removed. The center remains as a Health Care Center. DANE COUNTY LAKE VIEW SANATORIUM Construction: in progress September 14, 1929; nearing completion December 17, 1929 Location: 1202 Northport Drive Madison
