St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery

History

The cemetery established Oct. 12, 1868, is located on the north side of Good Hope at 38th St. Henry and Friederike Kirchhoff, sold one acre for "the purpose of a church and burying ground for members of the Ev. Lutheran Congregation of Good Hope and for no other religious denomination. If conveyed away, leased or used for any other purpose, said land to revert to Henry Kirchhoff, his heirs and assignees.

Some early death records referred to the cemetery as the "Good Hope" Cemetery.

Some burials were moved here from the Granville Cemetery, formerly located on the NW corner of North 43rd Street and Good Hope Road. That cemetery was relocated with Tripoli Country Club took over. Other bodies removed from the Town of Granville Cemetery were reinterred in Graceland.

When St. John's cemetery was created, Good Hope Road was not as wide and graves were located closer to the road. When Good Hope Rd was widened in 1969, the graves in the path of the road were moved farther up the hill in the cemetery or reburied in the West Granville cemetery. Approximately six burials had to be moved. Possibly a few were moved to the northeast seciton of the cemetery, and the remaining to Graceland Cemetery. The south side of the cemetery was then reinforced with stone.

Cemetery and church records are kept at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 3909 W. Clinton St. Brown Deer.
