KLETT FAMILY TRAGEDY

BROTHERS, SISTER VICTIM OF GAS

Trio Dead 18 Hours Belief, Accidental, Say Police

Three aged members of one family - two brothers and a sister - were found dead this afternoon in the home which they occupied for more than half a century at 1229 S. Twenty-second Street.

Death, according to the fire department rescue squad officials and police, apparently was due to the consumption of oxygen in the cottage by a gas heater.

The dead are: Miss Emily L. Klett 68 Charles, 70, a brother Edward, 65, a brother

The trio was last seen alive shortly after noon yesterday by neighbors. About 6 P. M. yesterday, Mrs. Mary Wiese, 1233 S. Twenty-Second Street, the next door neighbor, went into the house with the Klett family wash but obtained no response.

FINDS MAN DEAD When she and other neighbors had seen no one around the house today they became suspicious and shortly after 1 o'clock, Mrs. Wiese entered the house through an unlocked door. She found Charles Klett lying in the hallway adjacent to the bathroom.

She called for help. A fire department rescue squad was summoned. Members found Emily in bed and her brother, Edward, lying on the bathroom floor. One hand was in the empty tub, the other in the washbasin.

A gas heater in the home was on full force and is believed by officials to have consumed the oxygen in the home in which no window was found open.

A physician was summoned and pronounced the three dead. He said they apparently had been dead 18 hours.

THEORY OF POLICE

Police reconstruction of the accident is to the effect that Charles, becoming ill, attempted to make his way outside and call help. The elderly sister, feeling ill, had lain on her bed, fully dressed.

Indications were Edward had been cleaning the bathroom when he was overcome and collasped.

Detectives Raymond Demski and Edward Mochalski reported deaths apparently were accidental.

The youngest of five children, Adelaide, born on November 20, 1898, inherited her mother’s love of nature and gardening. This happened when she married Harry Krueger, whom she calls, "a gardener, a true farmer at heart." Two children and thirteen years later they built a stone house and garden. Adelaide’s garden is still a place of beauty, and she still receives awards.
