Pioneer Cemetery
Also Known as Dixon Cemetery or Brookfield East Cemetery
Brookfield, Brookfield Township, Waukesha County, Wisconsin

Location

This inactive cemetery is on the northwest corner of North Avenue and Pilgrim Road in the City of Brookfield, Section 15, Brookfield Township. It is near the Wirth Park Soccer fields and Dixon Elementary School.

History

Pioneer Cemetery was established circa 1840. It has been known by many names over the years. East Pioneer Cemetery, Dixon Cemetery, East Side Cemetery, and Brookfield Cemetery. The cemetery closed in 1944, but there were single burials in 1954 and 1975. The Brookfield Cemetery Association governed both this cemetery and Oak Hill Cemetery since 1851. On April 15, 1905, the cemeteries separated and Oak Hill formed its own association.

Records

There are no known cemetery records other than minutes of the meetings of the Association and the Treasurer's book. There is a map of the cemetery. They do not answer mail in requests.

The Waukesha County Historical Society and Research Museum has transcriptions from tombstones, 1840-1944, 1954 and 1975. In the Oak Hill Cemetery records at the Museum there are photocopies of the original record book which served Oak Hill Cemetary and Pioneer/Dixon Cemetery.

Records

A researcher sent me transcriptions of the tombstones copied under personal supervision of Mrs. Edgar Tallmadge, Secy, Waukesha County Historical Society, assisted by Mr. Edgar Tallmadge. The transcriptions were corrected and updated by Robert I and Sophia Wolff, November 7, 1994, City of Brookfield. I walked the cemetery May 2003 and made updates to the transcriptions.

Some of the stones were hard to read. I have put ?? in those areas.
